Is Dynamics 365 Business Central an ERP or a CRM solution?

Hello,

Just need some guidance, is Business Central an ERP module or a CRM module?

And if possible, would request you to give a bit detailed explanation about how it is ERP module or CRM module or may be both?

My understanding is - BC is both of ERP and CRM solution. It is more of ERP (since it contains functionalities like Finance, SCM, HR and Warehouse Mgmt, Manufacturing), however it contains basic CRM functionalities ( Contact Mgmt, Opportunity Mgmt, Relationship Mgmt, Task Mgmt etc).

Am i correct with my understanding. Please correct if i misunderstood anything and in case you want to add anything here.

Thank You,

Vaibhav

    Hello,

Yes, BC is the successor of Dynamics NAV which is an ERP solution for SMB markets. It does contain several modules. It does have some CRM capability but if your business does require more, then Dynamics 365 CRM may be required.

A good comparison guide can be found here:

You cannot really compare CRM versus BC as they are truly different but they can be integrated.

    Thanks.

Dynamics 365 Business Central is Microsoft's cloud-based ERP solution for small and midsize organizations. It's designed to help businesses manage their financials, manufacturing, shipping, projects, services, and more. Within Business Central is Relationship Management functionality to help support sales efforts.

Dynamics 365 Business Central is an ERP.  It has some CRM capabilities such as having contacts, opportunities, and campaigns but the functionality is very limited. Most people that want true in-depth CRM capabilities integrates Business Central with Dynamics 365 Sales. Here is a good good article that explains is Business Central an ERP or CRM

BC is an ERP system with a minimal and very complicated CRM module, its afaik barely a solution for SMBs. From my experience its mainly meant for big enterprises. The MS marketing claims that BC is also a benefit for SMBs but ... ok. i often heard from prospective customers that its too expensive for them, for SMBs. An other point is that the standard software does not meet many requirements of nowadays companies in the SMB area. Many features are missing. some standard modules are not satisfying and complicated, others are a minimal thing. the menus and forms are overloaded, the user experience is not good like in other modern erp systems. the whole software is very complicated, too many clicks are needed for simple things. Newbies have a hard life without intensive training. In most cases a couple of 3rd party modules is needed and/or many customizations.

For a full featured CRM you need to buy additional software like Dynamics 365 Sales or stuff like that, then its needed to integrate it with BC. Therefore the whole software project is often too expensive for most SMBs and lasts to long. I work with BC and NAV since many, many years and tried very often to sell it to SMB companies, no success at all.

As other users have mentioned, Business Central is an ERP system, not a CRM. However, it does include some light CRM capabilities.

Dynamics 365 Business Central is an ERP solution, not a CRM.

However, it can integrate tightly with CRM tools- especially Dynamics 365 Sales- to cover both back-office and customer-facing needs.

    Explanation:

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is designed as a comprehensive ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system for small and medium-sized businesses. Its core capabilities focus on internal business operations, including:

    • Financial management (GL, AP/AR, budgeting)
    • Supply chain and inventory management
    • Purchasing and sales order processing
    • Manufacturing and project management
    • Service management
While Business Central includes basic customer and contact management, these features are not full CRM functionality. For advanced CRM processes- such as lead management, opportunity tracking, marketing automation, and sales pipelines- Microsoft provides Dynamics 365 Sales, which is a dedicated CRM application.

    When used together:

    • Business Central (ERP) manages transactions and operations
    • Dynamics 365 Sales (CRM) manages customer engagement and sales processes
    • Data such as customers, quotes, and orders can be synchronized between the two
