Best Practice For Testing Customizations Exported Into Production CRM

Hi.  I am looking for a short explanation of the best practices most large organizations (1000+ CRM 2011 On Premise Users) use and Microsoft recommend to make sure that the customizations built and tested in both Development and Test environments and then are exported to the Production environment actually work in the Production environment.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

One solution is to make a copy of your organization database and import it with a new organizational name. That way you can test your customizations in the copy.
