Create a lead from an existing account

Currently I am reentering all the contact information into a new lead when there is already an account with the information in CRM.  Is there any way to create a lead from an existing account so I don't have to do this?

Thanks.  When you create a lead as soon as you save it a window pops open that says "link to an existing account" and contact.  It would make sense if you select an account that at that point the fields could be auto populated in the lead from the account.

Here are a couple of good youtube videos on creating workflows, they should walk you through the process and give you a good starting point

    Hi Sarabel,

Is the database of 5000 accounts all businesses/people with whom you have done business in the past, or is it a list that you are qualifying to see if they could develop into customers?  If so, I would suggest you may be better having all 5000 'accounts' in the system as leads, which can then be qualified and converted into accounts, contacts and opportunities as appropriate, or disqualified if they are not going to develop.

If it is new business with an exisitng client I would be inclined to start a new opportunity each time and record the contact that way.  The process you have in place seems to operating in opposition to the usual way CRM operates and is going to require a manual workaround.  You could always record contact with them in the 'activities' within the account (i.e. record any phone calls, emails, appointments, etc.) before you start a new opportunity record

We have a database of over 5000 accounts that I call so a lead always comes from an existing account for me.  If there is interest I create a lead which I then pass off to the salesman for that state who attempts to determine whether it is a  opportunity or not.  How do I create a workflow?  Thank you for the quick help.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to do this because most of the time you create an account from a lead (e.g. once the lead has been progressed and there is a good chance of business you then convert the lead into an account).

I'm not sure of your process but wouldn't it be better to create an opportunity and then link it to the account rather than create a new lead?

    but

If this is something you are going to do on a regular basis you could create a workflow to do it.  A manual workflow could be triggered from an account which creates a new lead and then copies values from the account to the new lead.
