If I erase values from an option set, do records that have those values selected still retain that information?

    Hello,

Optionset will show you a blank value.

    Just to sum up:

    1. If you delete an option, it will no longer be visible in crm but will still exists in database.

    2. The recommended is to either remap these values if you think you will need it for reporting etc.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Removing an Option-Set value from the Option-Set, this will not actually clear value from existing Records from database. But when you open the record the existing value will not appear or in other words  you can not  see any value has not been selected in the optionset as you have deleted the actual reference text  and value from the fields. It's like a invalid records.

It's recommended before you delete check whether any record contains with that option set value , use Advanced Find and change them before delete.

    Hope this will helps you.

Just to add to Alex's post. The values are retained in the records (rather than made null), and if you then recreate the value (with the same numeric value), then you can e.g. use it in Advanced Find to find all pre-existing records with this value

As an aside, this is a reason we've often ended up using entities instead of option sets for many things.  That way you can deactivate a record and it no longer shows up as an option to be picked, but existing things that reference it are unaffected.

I think it depends.. Those values will stay in the database(so you can literally go to the database and find them in the corresponding SQL tables), but, for CRM purposes, they will be blank (for Advanced find filters etc).

Value will be blank, so it's a better idea you can write a quick consult application or may workflow to update records to different value before removing old value. Or handle it later as suggested.

No. This results in an empty value.

You can see here for alternative to removing. Hiding via js.
