Common Data Services

Can any one please help me to understand the difference between CDS and Dynamics 365 Platform. I know Common Data Service allows us to store data coming from multiple  sources in a single store on top of which we can build apps or flows or reports using Power App or Power Automate or Power BI. Also I have read in Microsoft Documentation that CDS comes with a bunch of entities available already which can be customised and new entities can be created. However I have some open questions regarding CDS as a Dynamics 365 aka Power Platform Developer

  1. Are we going to stop using Dynamics 365 settings -> customization - >solutions area to configure and customise? Is Power Platform -> solutions would be the future for all configuration and customisation?
  2. When entity is created or edited in CDS, does this change get reflected in Dynamics 365 or Dynamics 365 environment and CDS environment are different? If these two are different, are these in sync.
  3. How CDS is synchronised with Dynamics 365 environment. I mean in any organisation, all the developers will be developing in CDS or Dynamics 365? How the changes made to CDS will be flown to Dynamics 365 or vice versa

Your help and valuable answers will be really appreciated

    Hi partner,

    1. It is currently unclear whether Dynamics 365 settings-> customization-> solutions area will be abandoned.

All customizations will be centralized in Power Apps (https://make.powerapps.com) in the future.

Environment settings will be centralized in Power Platform (https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/environments) in the future.

    2. Yes, this change get reflected in Dynamics 365.

    3. Dynamics 365 applications, such as Dynamics 365 Sales, Dynamics 365 Customer Service or Dynamics 365 Talent, also use the Common Data Service to store and secure data used by the applications.

In addition to the features available through the Power Apps portal, Common Data Service also includes features for developers to programmatically access metadata and data to create entities and business logic, as well as interact with data. For more information, see Common Data Service Developer Overview.

Please refer to this document for more details: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/common-data-service/data-platform-intro

To add to the previous answer, the CDS and Dynamics 365 environment are the same - i.e. Dynamics 365 settings -> customization - >solutions and the Power Platform are just 2 different user interfaces onto the same environment, so there is no need for synchronisation

    Adding to previous anwers,

MS is trying end users to use more of CDS which is collaborating & centralizing with different apps.

In D365, you might have seen the yellow suggestion ribbon on click of which you navigate to Power Apps like, copy an instance, for importing solutions, to check capacity & other services of your D365 instance. They are working a lot in this space & are trying to collaborate and provide end user more access to services.

    Hope this helps!
