Creating "Modified On" and "Modified By" Fields

I want to make a "Modified On" and "Modified By" field to track changes in each of our marketing permissions. I've built a workflow to update the marketing fields automatically when changed.

When I set the default value in the workflow to my custom field, my attempts to copy the stock fields, it fails to update when I change the permission. However when I use the out of the box default values for the "Modified" fields it runs perfectly.

Is there a way to create an exact copy of the system "Modified" fields? I can use the stock ones for the default value but then I am left with a dead field that's only useful for naming.

    Yes, my idea was to create fields that copied the actual function of the out of the box "Modified On" and "Modified By". I did some reading and found that it takes much more than just creating an identical field to replicate the actual functions of that field. Thanks for answering.

    Maybe i got it wrong, but your workflow must set custom Modified On and Modified By value from default Modified On and Modified By fields when user changes something in marketing permissions.  But in your current workflow setting you set value of your custom Modified fields in same fields.
