Howdy All,

OK so why do we label BC and NAV as SMB?
Just cause Microsoft says it's a SMB solution, many companies trading over $1B rely on Navision or Business Central (Same thing) as their stable ERP. Mind you those companies have modified the junk out of it, but that cause it's so easy to extend. Thats just the companies I have supported in my 25 years, let alone the thousands of others out there.

So why does Microsoft try to pigeonhole it into there? Is it so that AX/F&O is protected??

It's Fantastic for Startups, Growing Companies, and Complex Multi-national companies.... It's not bloated like the other ERP products, and you get value fast rather than being stuck in an implementation for years that fails.
Handles all aspects of all businesses and allows you to extend to fill in 'special' gaps that customers have.

Business Central punches so much above its weight, why not say it like it is??

Big BC Fan!

    I totally agree!

Business Central is often categorized as an SMB solution. This is misleading:

    1. Scalability – The platform can support companies of all sizes, from small startups to international enterprises with hundreds of users.

    2. Enterprise-grade functionality – Business Central includes finance, supply chain, warehousing, manufacturing, service management, and project accounting.

    3. Global coverage – Localized in over 100 countries/regions, with multi-entity and multi-currency support.

    4. Positioning vs. reality – Microsoft positions Business Central in the SMB market to differentiate it from Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain, but many midmarket and large companies successfully run BC as their main ERP.

Conclusion: Business Central is not just an SMB solution. It is a scalable mid-market ERP that can support both smaller businesses and complex global organizations.

I think Microsoft leans on the “SMB” label less because of BC’s actual limits and more because of portfolio politics. If they market it as mid-market or enterprise-ready, it risks stepping on F&O’s toes. But in real projects, you can see BC scaling well beyond what people expect.

What I really like about BC is that it balances depth with agility, you can get value in months instead of years, and you’re not buried under the weight of an overengineered ERP. For many companies, even very large ones, that speed and adaptability are worth more than the “enterprise” badge.

So yes, Microsoft may pigeonhole it, but in practice BC proves itself in whichever league you put it.
