How do I avoid updating the "Modified By" field with the workflow Owner when a workflow is triggered?

I noticed that when I trigger a workflow that updates a record on a CRM Opportunity, the "Modified By" field now shows the "Owner" of the workflow.  Is it possible to avoid this? I understand that this is happening because the Opportunity is technically getting updated on behalf of the workflow owner, but this is confusing to salespeople as they are the ones who are modifying the record.

If it is not possible to avoid updating "Modified By" with the workflow owner, is there a way I can override it to show the correct user who is actually making changes?

    Hi,

If this is a Real Time workflow then you can set "Execute As" to "The user who made changes to the record". If it is not then you can change it to real time (if possible).

Take a look at this blog (only for screenshots).

    Hope this helps.

    Hello,

As suggested by Ravi, in the workflow designer, make sure that you select "The user who made changes to the record" for the Execute As option.

    Thank you both!

Ravi, what blog are you referring to?

Your suggestions worked.  I do have one related question as well.  Our company creates Quotes in QuoteWerks, and when the Quote gets created an Opportunity automatically gets created in CRM.  Since QuoteWerks is creating the Opportunity record in CRM, the "Modified By" and "Created By" fields in the Opportunity show "QuoteWerks Connect" rather than the user who actually created the record in QuoteWerks.  Is there a way around this?  I have a field called "Prepared By" in both QuoteWerks and CRM that displays who actually created/updated the record.  Is there a way I can pass whoever is in this field, or possibly another field, into the "Modified By" field so the "Modified By" doesn't show "QuoteWerks Connect"?

    Hi Tgiard,

It's possible to override the createdon and modified on using a preoperation plugin. Check out the blog post below for the steps.

Sorry I meant overriding Created By and Modified By fields
