Canceled Approval Request - still displays as approval pending

We just set up a user an an approver admin.  This allowed them the permissions to cancel approval requests for other users.  Yet despite being able to hit the Cancel Approval button, the Purchase Order, in this instance still displays as pending approval.  Is there a step that we may be missing?  Please advise.  Thank you.

    I tested with the out of the box purchase order approver workflow, and clicking Cancel Approval Request changed the status of the Purchase Order to Open. Perhaps there is a problem with your workflow setup.
     
    If you go to Workflows -> open your workflow, do you have an Event/Response for cancelling the approval request? If i select the line for the approval request being cancelled, I can see a response that reopens the document. Do you have something similar?

    I agree with Valentin. It should all just work. 
     
    On the PO page, navigate to Order...Approvals and you can see what has happened to the approval request. 
     
    It might show you what error has arisen, but there is a not a lot of detail. 
     
    Sometimes with approval flows - only with approval via Power Automate in my experience - there is deadlock in writing the change. It could be one reason but never seen it with the Out of the Box flows. So, my next guess would be an issue with user permissions.

    I agree with Tom that this seems to be a permission issue. It might be that even a user has been set up as workflow admin, he doesn't have the workflow related permission to reopen the request. For testing, grant that user something like full business access and test again. I remember BC used to have permissions set for workflow but unable to find it now. 
     
    You could also design a superuser as workflow admin to see if anything different happens after cancel a request.
