Using Always Encrypted for GP

Hello,

I have a client that is required to encrypt PII data. I researched encryption with GP a while back and the most common answer was to use TDE and enforce protocol encryption. Always encrypted is available in SQL Server 2016+. Has this been tested with GP?

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/security/encryption/always-encrypted-database-engine?view=sql-server-2017

Regards,

Kayla

Certainly the earlier versions of GP were compatible, I would expect the current to be also compatible, the encryption is at the transport layer so the application is not greatly effected by it.

You might be best double checking with support to make certain.

Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) is supported by Dynamics GP and pretty much the only form of database encryption that is supported.

Field level or database level encryption is not supported in Microsoft Dynamics GP, mainly because if you were to encrypt the information in the system or company database(s), it will cause Dynamics GP to not be able to read the information stored within the databases.

SQL Server also supports column level and cell level encryption, but again, if you were to do column level encryption, it will render the Dynamics GP program unable to read the data stored on the database.

This would be the same for any version of Dynamics GP and we haven't heard of this changing anytime soon.

    Thanks
