V10 Home Page Shortcuts

We have noticed that after adding an external shortcut to an excel workbook on the home page, only 1 such workbook can be opened at the same time.  I have 1 user who regularly updates 3 spreadsheets with commentary etc, while working in GP.  I've asked her to navigate to those workbooks through windows explorer rather than using her shortcuts from the GP home page.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is it normal to only be able to keep one shortcut open at a time?  We are newly upgraded to V10.

Thanks,

Palma

Good stuff. Best of luck with your continued use of GP.

Thank you all very much, by the way.  I'm no expert, and this was the first time I'd posted any questions up here.  All things considered, the feedback (1 week after the upgrade) from our users has been pretty positive about v10.  And for today, I prefer the "where did my spreadsheet go" questions to the "why can't I print" questions.  It means we're moving in the right direction.

Well, I guess that aspect of Excel hasn't changed between 2003 and 2007. But the important thing is the cause of the issue has been identified and your problem solved.

You're absolutely right, it is.  And this is on 2003.  Only isolated users here have 2007 so far.

Ruel has a point. If you open two spreadsheets as you have done...and then click the Restore Down button on the top left hand corner...is the first spreadsheet behind it?

The cause may be simpler than you think. You mentioned that when you close workbook 2, Excel switches to workbook 1. So that is an indication that workbook 1 is still loaded but just probably occluded.

If you are using office 2007, Excel uses a multiple document view, which means all your workbooks will be inside one main window (at least that is what I see in my Excel 2007 here), whereas Word is single document, which opens up a new window for each document.

What's odd is that only excel seems to be affected.  From the home page, I can open multiple web pages, multiple word documents etc at one time and jump around between them as needed.  No error messages or odd behaviour.  With excel only, we can open a first spreadsheet, work in it, save changes and close it.  But if we attempt to open a second workbook, the first just disappears.  There's no indication that the first was ever opened - it doesn't appear on the screen in any way.  It's not until we close the second workbook that we now see the first on our screen, with the message asking if we want to save changes to it.

I take it from your reply that this is not normal v10 GP behaviour.  Hard to tell with these things right after an upgrade, while I'm still unfamiliar with new features.

    Hi,

Just to confirm, I can add two or more quicklinks (to XL spreadsheets) to my homepage...I can click on both of these in turn...and both spreadsheets open.

Is it the case that you cannot do the above?

If so, what happens when you click on the second (and subsequent) quick links that are supposed to open an XL spreadsheets? Does it just not open, or do you get any error messages?

Can you open an xl spreadsheet...and than open another quicklink (to a Dynamics GP window, word document, other application) etc.
