What is the best vendor for sales tax automation in GP? Avalara, Taxware, Vertex, Wolters-Klewer, or Thomson Reuters? Alternatively, which vendor is the least recommended?

I would say it depends on what products you sell. If the products you sell are ones that lots of other companies sell then most of those tax vendors will already have tax categories setup for them. For my company, we are in the agricultural area and when we went looking for a tax vendor we found nobody had tax categories setup already for what we sell. We ended up going with Thomson Reuters since they were willing to work with us to create the tax categories we needed. We have been with them for at least 8 years now and have been very happy with them.
