alter behavior of decimal entry in fields

Hi. We would like to alter the default behavior of entering numbers into decimal fields. The default behavior of entering decimal numbers is that digits fill fields from the far right (in the decimal places). If there are two decimal places, then typing '12' in a decimal field will give you .12. If you type '.' then the '12' will shift to the left of the decimal point.

We would rather the number fill to the left of the decimal point and fill to the right of the decimal point after a '.' is entered (other products have this ability). In our example, typing '12' will yield 12.00. In our environment, we are entering many sales orders on a daily basis. The common case is the order quantity is a whole number, but sometimes can be a decimal number. Filling from the left of the decimal will save thousands of '.' presses.

There seems to be no way to capture keystrokes in Dexterity, which would have allowed us customize this behavior. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this behavior?

I'm not helping, but I know of no way reasonable way to accomplish this. Actually, this type of setup was meant to save keystrokes so that you didn't have to enter the decimal, you only need to type the numbers. In the beginning it may be odd, but it isn't that big of an adjustment once you get used to it. It's kind of like the date fields, you don't have to type any hyphens or dashes.  That was a pain in the beginning, but now I try to use it everywhere and am surprised at how many programs need the extra characters.

I'm on your side when it comes to wanting this to be an option. Every calculator I've ever owned had this option, and of course QuickBooks has this option too. I have never selected the GP method whenever I could choose the other. This might be a good recommendation to post on Microsoft/connect. Microsoft really does look at those entries. I got two features added to the software just by promoting it on connect.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

The only thing I could come up with was to move the decimal field off the form and use a string field in its place. I wrote a sanscript to check that the string is legal (all numeric and at most 1 '.'). If it's legit, then I convert to decimal and insert into the hidden decimal field. If it's not legit, then I throw a warning and refocus back to the string field.

Wow, are you going to do that for all of the currency entry fields?

Just for the line items in the sop entry. Would be nicer if there was a way to change the default behavior across GP, but doesn't seem like that exists at the moment.

After years of using GP, it's second nature for me to hit the period button when entering a whole number in a transaction.  In fact, I'm learning AX, which doesn't require the period to enter a whole number but i can't stop doing it!
