Problems updating data for existing contacts using an import

I am trying to import some new data into existing contacts in CRM 2011 On Prem.  I am encountering some difficulties as CRM is creating duplicate records rather than updating the existing records.  I have checked the duplicate settings and rules and they are set up.  I have also used the contact template to ensure the mapping is correct.

Any suggestions as I am trying to create a more automatic process to update the information rather than enter it manually.

The system will not do an upsert and you will provably need to use a 3rd party tools to import with create or update capabilities, something like scribe or informatica.

The cheap way will be to create an application that can do the create or update...

I am looking for exactly the same solution updating some fields in existing leads in my online CRM. One way of doing this is exporting current leads into csv updating it with another columns with missing fields and importing again. I am not sure what will happen to notes and other activities which is already there.

Did you try to export the records selecting "Static worksheet with records from this page" and checking the "Make this data available for re-importing by including required column headings" check?

You could do an advanced find to look up for the records you need to update and the export using the above options.

    Best regards
