Is there a way to merge to product number / change a product's product number to an existing one?

Posted on by 38

Previously I have asked a question about "is it possible to change a product's Product number", and the answer is yes. But since then I have encountered another problem when trying to change Product number:

Due to managerial reasons, the same product could have different Item numbers and Product numbers in different subcompanies. And we're trying to change these products' Product number so that the same product share the same Product number according to a numbering rule we developed. (we're not trying to change item number since we know that's impossibe).

And the problem is, although we can change a product's Product number, we cannot if the new Product number already exists in the system. There is no merge option in the menu either, unlike Global address book. So my question is, is there a way to do it? If not, do you think it is possible to achieve it with customized functionalities?

Hello Marco, are you trying to trade inter-company these item numbers?

Not only you have the issue that you have different product numbers linked to your item numbers but also that you have already transacted the item numbers you would like to use in the sub-companies and have linked to the same product numbers.

You will need to create all the new product numbers using your naming convention

    1. Release in the subcompanies your products ( and item numbers)
    2. Rename item numbers but adding a suffix like itemnumber_NEW  before adding any stock
    3. obsolete the old item numbers and move all open orders, stock into the new item numbers.

It sounds like a new master data implementation..

    Hi Marco,

There is no support out of the box to merge items like the global address book. You can consider a customization, but you can easily create inconsistencies in the database. Ensure you will rebuild the InventSum for the merged item and clean records for removed item number.

Thanks Charlotte, but this post does not seem to solve my question, since we do not use number sequences for either item or product number. We have no trouble creating released products that have dfiffrent product number than the item number, as long as the product number is unique...
