Customisations and Upgrade problems - Do I need to worry?

Hi All -

My company is busy implementing Dynamics CRM and I am looking after the technical side.  Customisation includes defining custom entities, fields and relationships, using IFRAMEs to present external data and build some custom screens, manipulating screens with javascript and loading additional links between entities when certain entities are saved.

It strikes me that the more customisation we do, the more likely we are to have problems with upgrades, but I have not been able to find any guidance on this.

  • What types of customisation typically cause problems with upgrades?
  • Are there any Microsoft guidelines which should be followed to ensure that upgrades are always smooth?

Thanks,

Peter

After some further digging, I found the following guidance in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 SDK:

Supported Extensions for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg328350.aspx

    Thanks for the input!

    Peter,

I back everyting Rune said above and add my answers to both of your questions:

    1. What types of customisation typically cause problems with upgrades?

Answer: Normally the customizations that create issues are the ones that come from third party solution providers that are not coded with supported code 100% of the time. I've seen third party companies that would not hessitate to try unsupported changes to make their "solution" work with CRM (I.E. Changes to the registry, changes to the database, changes to the config or xml files of the out of the box CRM solution, etc.) - I've never had any issues with customizations made with out of the box tools.

    2. Are there any Microsoft guidelines which should be followed to ensure that upgrades are always smooth?

Answer: I don't think so. I don't remember reading any specific guidelines for this but I download the Implementation and Administration guide for CRM 2011 to see if there is anything specific you can find.

    Hi Peter

As long as you keep to doing supported actions there should not be a problem upgrading.

There is no list of supported and unsupported actions, but a golden rule is that:

    1. if you can implement the functionality in the CRM User Interface, its supported.

    2. If the change that you implement is described in the Microsoft SDK, its supported.

    3. Any kind of update directly to the SQL database is ALLWAYS unsupported.

If you have CRM consultants, that has implemented before, to implement the system for you then they will most likely be very aware of any unsupported actions and tell you if that action if they start up on an unsupported action.

None of the things you mention, looks to me to be a problem in an upgrade.
