Urgent: Business Central Sandbox Upgrade & Extension Deployment Issues

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting my Business Central sandbox to the version I need for testing my extension, and I’m running out of time before production forces an upgrade.

Current Situation:

  • Development Instance: 25.2.27733.29622
  • Sandbox (Target for Testing): 24.5.23489.29195 (with an old version of my extension)
  • Next Scheduled Upgrade: 25.0.23364.24599
  • Production Upgrade Deadline: 28th (at which point my extension will be disabled)

Issues Encountered:

  • I added my extension for the Next Major Upgrade and tried to force the upgrade, but it didn’t go through.
  • The upgrade window keeps getting pushed a week ahead, and this has now happened twice.
  • I need my sandbox at the correct version to test before production updates.
  • If my sandbox updates to 25.0, I assume my extension (built on 25.2) will still have symbol compatibility issues.

Questions:

  1. Is there a way to manually upgrade my sandbox to the version I need?
  2. Are there logs I can check to understand why the upgrade isn’t happening?
  3. If my sandbox does reach 25.0, would I still need another upgrade to 25.2 for my extension to work?

    You're facing a version mismatch issue that’s preventing you from testing your extension before production updates. Here’s how to handle it effectively:
     

    1. Manually Upgrading the Sandbox

    Unfortunately, you cannot manually upgrade a Business Central SaaS sandbox to a specific version. Microsoft controls the upgrade waves, and tenants are upgraded based on a predefined schedule. However, you have a few options:

    • Option 1: Create a New Sandbox

      • Go to Admin Center → Environments → Create New Sandbox
      • Select the highest available version (it may not be 25.2 yet but should be closer than 24.5).
      • Install your extension and test there.
    • Option 2: Request an Upgrade via Microsoft Support

      • In Admin Center, navigate to Help & Support.
      • Open a support ticket requesting an immediate upgrade.
      • Provide details on why you need the upgrade urgently (i.e., production extension dependency)

    2. Checking Logs for Upgrade Issues

    To understand why your sandbox isn’t upgrading, check:

    • Admin Center → Operations → History

      • Look for failed upgrade attempts and error messages.
    • Event Viewer Logs (via Business Central Admin Center)

      • Logs may indicate whether the upgrade was postponed due to conflicts.

    3. Compatibility of Extension (25.2 on 25.0 Sandbox)

    • If your extension was built on 25.2, it may not be compatible with 25.0 unless you explicitly allowed backward compatibility (runtime in app.json).
    • If the sandbox updates to 25.0, you may need to:
      • Recompile the extension for 25.0.
      • Deploy this compatible version for testing.
      • Wait for Microsoft to upgrade to 25.2 before full testing.

    Recommended Next Steps

    1. Try creating a new sandbox with the latest available version.
    2. Check upgrade logs to see why the upgrade is delayed.
    3. Contact Microsoft Support via Admin Center → Help & Support and request an immediate upgrade.
    4. Prepare a backup strategy by creating a 25.0-compatible version of your extension to avoid production downtime.
