Scan documents to doc attach on a networked scanner?

Hi there. I can't seem to find any documentation on this, and don't have a WIA scanner handy to test this. Does anyone know if users who want to use the scan and attach feature in GP 2013 R2 and later need to have a scanner directly attached to their machine? Or can this be a scanner on the network?

One of my clients is considering upgrading to GP 2015 (from 2013 SP1) and we're trying to figure out if they will need to buy a scanner for each user, or if they will be able to use the networked scanner they just purchased.

    Hi Michael,

The scanning functionality was included on GP 2013 R2. The user can attach the documents directly scanning the documents or can scan and save the copy on the machine to load the attachments into GP. I believe, scanner on the network will work just like how the printer works on the network.

    Refer the links for reference.

Shan, thank you. So if I understand correctly - if the user has the driver installed on their PC, GP will recognize the scanner on the network? Or does the scanner have to be directly connected to the user's machine in order for the "scan" button to be available to click?

    Hi Michael,

The drivers installed on their PC will work.

First I have to say that the documentation on the scan feature is woefully inadequate.  There.  I feel better.  There seem to be two sides to this from what I can see in various sources.  You need a WIA compliant driver for your printer.  And you need the WIA Service running in Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services.  I see this service running on my Windows 7 clients.  But I do not see it on Windows Server 2012 where my terminal server client is installed and where most of my users go to open Dynamics GP (2015R2 btw).  Also, the only listing of WIA compliant printers that I could find on the Microsoft web site is really really old.  This appears to be a not-ready-for-prime-time feature.

I agree Lou!  I can't find anything about setting up the scanner.  I am also in a terminal server environment.  Did you find out if this feature will work on a terminal server and how to find scanners that are WIA compliant?

Is there any update on this as to if it works on terminal or network printers and does anyone have a recommendation on a printer?

You need to check with your printer manufacturer concerning support for WIA drivers,

That said, this is an excellent topic to bring up at Summit in Tampa.

Lou, did you figure this out? I also run in a terminal server environment and can not figure out how to scan directly into GP from the client computer that has a scanner attached to it. Currently we scan to a folder and then attach the document, cumbersome. Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated!
