Fat Client Speed Issues

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by 80

We are currently in the process of upgrading from GP10 to GP 2013 and are having some speed issues and I wondered if anybody else out  there is having the same problems.

We are trying to use the fat client to connect to the server located with Amazon Web Services. However the system is unusable since everything takes a long time to load up.

When we log on using the fat client located in the same location as the server the speed issues dissappear so the communication links appear to be the problem. The pipe is large enough since we already access other systems in a similar ways at AWS on multiple servers.

The web client is obviously a possiblity however we have a considerable number of modifications that would need to be rewritten at a cost plus electronic funds transfer will never work with the web client,  so I would rather not go down that route.

I am just trying to understand if this is a known problem or an issue that is specific to us.

Fat client connected to a remote server is specifically recommended against for the very reason you are experiencing - performance is miserable.  Many companies use terminal server or Citrix to make connection to an off-premise server.

100% agree with Frank.  Unless your connection is 100MB symmetrical with very low latency, it's never going to work like you want it to.

If your organization is trying to go with a hosted type of a server/environment, you may want to consider Data Resolution or others. This will allow the organization to host GP on a platform that allows users remote access just like a Terminal Server.
