Update GL Account Number

Posted on by 174
In Business Central, you can go one-by-one and change a GL account number and it will maintain history and balances. If you use edit in Excel or a configuration package, data integrity isn't maintained. Anyone have a recommendation on how to do mass changes? Looking to avoid going through 1,000s of GL accounts one by one. Thanks!

Thank you all for the feedback. Anyone try to run a macro on the front-end to go through the changes?

Hi, you can customize an import tool, but you need to record the primary key that needs to be modified.

    Hope this helps.

I have some bad news for you. And it comes in two:

    1. Changing G/L No By using a configuration package wil never ever work. Obviously

The No. field is the PK of T15, so if your goal is to rename account 10000 to 10010, what will happen is:
    - account 10000 will remain untouched
    - account 10010 will be created, with whatever data that was attributed to it.

All setup, linked to No. 10000 will still be referring to 10000 (as it should).
Bottom line: if you try to do this via a Conf pack, you are just creating new accounts, or overwriting existing ones with new information from the conf pack (very unwanted!)

    2. Edit in Excel is even worse for your goal
I tried the Edit in Excel for you.
That behaviour is even worse for the goal you are trying to achieve: the No. field gets in fact changed ( even though it is the PK!!)
On the other hand: integrity gets lost along the way. ALl setup is still referring to the original No.

Trying this via Edit in excel is mayhem for your setup!

Are you sure that edit in excel does not maintain integrity?
In my experience you should be able to use edit in Excel for this,
The alternative is to create a simple Excel import that can fix this.
