Inserting records to CRM from outside source

CRM2016 On Premises

I'm just exploring all possibilities. Currently I'm importing data into CRM from a live legacy system's SQL database using a third party  piece of software or a CRM custom workflow. I'd like to look at the possibility of writing the records directly to CRM from a Web Application or application fired from a SQL server

1. is there a supported means of doing this

2. has anyone done anything like this and what advice / pitfalls to be aware of

    Hello ,

    - Build a WCF service (REST/SOAP) which communicates to CRM using SDK and expose the service in the WEB so that external system can access the API to insert the data.

In addition if you are in on-premise ,using AD user authentication you can directly access CRM Web API if the web application hosted in same network.

You can always write code using the SDK / WebAPI, but in this case you might consider using Flow/Logic Apps using a SQL trigger that writes data to the CRM connector. You can use an on-premise data gateway to connect to an on-premise sql server, and 'fire' your flow/logic app when SQL records are created and/or modified, then map the fields from your SQL database right into a CRM record.

    Hi PeteN,

SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) is a great ETL tool for implementing this.
