In th Pharmacy world, we use serial numbers and lot tracking. Is it possible to use both? Can an extra field(s) be added to capture the lot r serial number?

Many times the Work order is numbered as the lot tracking, so you setup the serial tracking for the inventory item and when creating the item via Work Order, the Work Order number you assign or is assigned will be used as the lot number.

Serialization and lot tracking are assigned at the item level. It is just another 'attribute' of the item or item layer. If you go to the Options button from Item Maintenance, you can set the item tracking option. By tracking serials and lots, you can do traces, which in the pharmiceutical world, I am sure is a requirement.
If you are already using the items, you will need to clear any available quantities in order to change the tracking option.
