OLENotes - To UNC path or not UNC Path (that is the question)

We've been using a UNC path for OLENotes in GP2010.  In our Citrix environment some users can see the paper clip buttonon a Notes Window, while others can't.  We are not receiving any error messages.

I consulted the Oracle of all GP Knowledge (CustomerSource) and...

KB873845 (reveiwed July 25,2011) and KB852251 (reveiwed July 11, 2011) both say that a UNC path is NOT valid.

KB850041 (reveiwed  July 10, 2011) suggests that UNC paths are just fine.

I have RTFM'd - no references to setting this up.

This looks like a great exam question (depending on how they mark it right or wrong).

Does anyone have the definitive answer?  Does Microsoft?

Thanks

Tim Foster

UNC paths are fine only if the directory structure exists for the company. When you use UNC, it will not automatically create the folder like a mapped drive will. By directory structure I mean, for each company, If your dex.ini looks like this:

    OLEPath=\\ServerName\ShareName\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2010\Data\Notes\

If you have 3 company dbs named

    TWO

    CODB1

    CODB2

You need to have the folder structure below already built:

You don't need any notes in the folders, they just need to be there.

    \\ServerName\ShareName\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2010\Data\Notes\TWO\OLENotes

    \\ServerName\ShareName\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2010\Data\Notes\CODB1\OLENotes

    \\ServerName\ShareName\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2010\Data\Notes\CODB1\OLENotes

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Leslie,

I am trying to systematically eliminate causes of some of my users being unable to access notes properly while the majority can (and do on a daily basis.)  OLE notes were working for all users in GP 10.0.  When we upgraded to GP 2010, we moved the shared location to a new server.

The conflicting information published in the KB is not helpful.

    On to the next possibility...

    Thanks

    Tim,

Are you still having a problem?

It's got to be in the pathing or the way the user is "looking" at the location.

Please let me know if you have another question, or if I can help.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

You have an excellent question.  I have started some internal testing on with OLE Notes and and UNC versus mapped drives.  In my experience, UNC paths work that best as all workstation will see the UNC path the same where a mapped drive can be unique to each workstation.  But, having said that, I am going to research this and see if the can get the KB articles you mentioned all saying the same thing.  I will post again with my results.

    Thanks,

    Lee

Both unc and drive mapping work. . .  but imho drive mapping is better.  If you link to documents the document path is embedded in the OLE Container file. If you use unc and change your server the unc path is no longer vaild and the link is broken. We have just experienced this.  you can verify by using 7-zip to open one of the OLEcontainer files. You will see objects such as embedded1, embedded2, etc.  Open one and look for a file [1]ole. open it and you will see the path in this file.  So if you use drive mapping you can direct the drive mapping to whatever server now holds the attachements. . . . .

    Tim,

I bet the users who don't see the paper clip are HR users.  Check the dex.ini for both the OLEPath and the OLEPathHR.  If the OLEPathHR folder does not exist, your HR users may not see the paper clips, but your sales and financial users will.

I'm having the problem with only ONE workstation.  No matter what GP or network user is logged in we cannot see notes from only one workstation.

I copied the dex.ini file from a workstation that can see notes and still nothing.   Bottom line is that you can see notes from all other workstations regardless of login credentials and we cannot see notes from the problem workstation regardless of the login credentials (both gp & network)

    We don't have HR loaded...

    Anything else to try?

If you're logged in on the workstation can you use File Explorer or something else (not GP) to get to the Path specified in the dex.ini?

Just a word of caution -  If you are using the Manufacturing Module, UNC paths for the OLE Notes is not supported even in GP2013 SP2.  You will need to use a mapped drive.

Where are you getting that information Martin?
