Virtualisation and GP?

(0) ShareShare

Has anyone implemented Dynamics GP in a virtual server enviornment? This would include eConnect and Business Portal products as well. Just wondering if there is anything we need to look out for...what VM software is best  Is it ok with V8 or should we upgrade to version 10 first, 32 versus 64 bit servers etc? Any experiences / comments welcomed as we are just at the start of the planning phase.

    Re: Virtualisation and GP?

    Hi Gunner

You will need to be on Microsoft Dynamics GP v10.0 and use a Microsoft virtualization technology to be fully supported that has been tested.

Below are some articles that you should read before you continue:

    Microsoft Dynamics GP and Virtualization

Description of the support of Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 in a virtual environment

System Requirements for Microsoft® Dynamics GP 10.0

Support policy for Microsoft software running in non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software

Description of the 64-bit operating systems that are supported together with Microsoft Dynamics GP

    https://mbs.microsoft.com/knowledgebase/KBDisplay.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;918983

I will let others respond with their experiences.

    Re: Re: Virtualisation and GP?

    Hi,

Another customer is considering moving to GP virtualisation. They already have VM Ware in production for other aspects of their business...and obviously don't want to invest in different Virtualisation software just for GP.

Any advice? I believe VM Ware is not supported, but can someone give me guidlines as to the business risk?...anyone using VM Ware with GP? What are your experiences? Any specific issues why its not supported?

And there's more...anyone attempt to use econnect and business portal with GP and VM Ware?...what configurations? (ie...GP on virtual server, BP on its own dedicated server etc.)

    Thanks.

Re: Re: Re: Virtualisation and GP?

As a member of the Asia Pacific Microsoft Dynamics GP support team, here is my take:

Microsoft is unable to provide support for platforms that have not been tested.

We have not tested Dynamics GP VM Ware and I cannot see this happening anytime soon.

So while it may work perfectly, if you have an issue that cannot be replicated in a supported environment we will not be able to support you.

If an issue is found to be caused by the use of VM Ware and does not occur in a support environment, it doubt it will be fixed.

It does not mean your system is not supported at all, it means that we can only support what can be seen in a supported environment.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Virtualisation and GP?

Thanks for that Dave. Much appreciated and very well explained. As I said one of our customers already uses VM Ware...so I guess with us telling them the above...they will probably decide to roll out GP on VM Ware and see how it goes. Our other customer has yet to buy VM software so hopefully we can move them towards a tested and supported product.

    Many thanks.

    Re: Virtualisation and GP?

We've got "GP 10" running in a lot of Vmware enviroments.  However, what you are really asking is how well does SQL 200x perform in a virtual landscape.  Our experience is that if you're dealing with low transactional volume your database server will work adequately.

However, when discussion advances to highly utilitzed systems, say 15 - 20+ concurrent users running SOP, analytics, large multiple payrolls, etc., I think you will be unpleasantly surprised by the virtualized server performance. I would encourage you to offer a test or acceptance system to your client actually measure performance before commiting to VMware, Xen, Hypervisor, etc.  You pay a price for the advantages of virtualization that IT people like, one that users will experience every day.

    Re: Re: Virtualisation and GP?

    Hi John,

Thanks for that. I was concentrating on how GP functionality (incl. Business Portal, eConnect) would respond on VMWare, and not considering the impact on SQL. This is something we'll definately have to test.

I think I'll put up a blog on this project when it gets off the ground. I found it hard to ge straighforward advice / user experience like from John and David Musgrave above. If anyone else is doing similar virtualisation projects at the moment, maybe you'd like to join in. Let me knw. I'll post details later.

Re: Re: Re: Virtualisation and GP?

    Hi,

We are using GP,BP, and eConnect in a virtual and hosted environment using VMware. Each of these is on a separate virtual server. Our eCommerce site directly feeds into GP using eConnect. We are basically an advertising company creating and selling ads on tv,radio, online search, and prints. We also do SEO and SEM. So, we are talking about thousands of transactions on a monthly basis. We currently have 15 GP users. Overall performance is good. There is, however, some network disconnections happening from time to time. Not so often that it would annoy the users, though. This is probably because the whole environment is hosted to a data center, not because of the VMWare.

Since this configuration is not supported or recommended by MS, I suggest that you put a DR (disaster recovery) system in place to mitigate the risks.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Thanks for the brilliant response. Great to know someone is successfully operating in that enviornment. Really helps us to know someone else has tried it and succeeded. Again, many thanks for your response, we really appreciate it.

    Best regards,

    Ian.
