Business Central Vs. D365 F&O and Supply Chain

Hi All,

Could you please advise where I can find a deep, function by function breakdown of D365 BC vs D365 F&O & D365 Supply Chain?

I would appreciate a venn diagram with a thorough breakdown...

My thought at this time is to do some text analysis based on the table of contents on microsofts page.....most of the analyses I see are based on # of users, size, cost to implement etc....a little too high level. Thank you

Business Central has the same main modules as Finance & Operations, but F&O goes much deeper and has more functionality than Business Central.  For example, both BC and F&O has manufacturing, but BC only has out-of-the-box capabilities for discrete manufacturing while F&O has capabilities for both discrete and process manufacturing.  The trade off to F&O having so many more features is that it is much more expensive and is longer/more expensive to implement, so you really only want to implement F&O over BC if there are a lot of features and functions in F&O that BC does not have.  If it is only a small feature or two that is missing from BC, you could save money and effort by having a developer customize the small missing features or finding a third party add-on that fills that need.

Microsoft does not have good documentation comparing the two products at a detailed level. Your best bet is to talk to a Microsoft partner who implements both BC and F&O and ask specific questions relevant to your business. Some Microsoft partners also have some good resources comparing the two.  Here is one from Rand Group that has a high level overview of BC vs F&O  and there is a more detailed white paper comparison you can download from that same page.  Hope that helps.

RE: Business Central Vs. D365 F&O and Supply Chain

    Hi Sammy

Honestly it is all depends on your "business process" and what you want to accomplish. I have seen small companies using F&O and big companies using BC.

In general BC has less functions  than FO and hence lots of ISV exist to cover these area. My suggestion is look into your business process and then search for each area and see if BC and FO are capable to handle it. Also, look for BC+ISV here then compare the two list. If you need lots of ISV in BC then F&O maybe a better option (and more costly)

These are a few examples that F&O can handle but BC has no functions for it

Loan (if your company lend loan)

Project Collaboration (see it like project management, BC has Job but still not a project)

    Rebate Agreement

    Vendor collaboration

Quality control (BC has some functions but not enough in my opinion)

    Expense management (Travel, hotel, etc)

    Logistic management

    I hope this help

Hi, I'm sorry I don't have better sources, but if you google it, you should find some comparison tables made by partners.

Or you can directly select a product on the Dynamics 365 homepage and view Microsoft's product introduction.

    Hi Zhu,

You are always very insightful and helpful, thank you for sharing this graphic.

To be honest, it is a little confusing....for example D365 Finance has "Tax", but BC does not. This may imply that BC can not do taxes, but that is not the case. This is a nice high level diagram, but if I shared this with my stakeholders it may present more questions than resolve answers.

Do you know of anything more granular, or another graphic I could view?

    Thank you
