Load Balancing Vs Failover Cluster for ADFS and ADFS Proxy in Dynamics CRM Farm

Hello everybody,

I'm working on a Dynamics CRM architecture and I need to choose between Load Balancing (NLB or HLB) or Failover Cluster for my ADFS servers and ADFS Proxy servers.

I need to justify my choice using a valid arguments.

I don't know if this is the appropriate forum for that. But I don't know if there is another forum for this kind of questions.

    Hi Nizar,

They are quite different. In NLB the members are active at the same time.

An NLB array allows load to be spread amongst all the participating machines and delivers a form of high availability if you size the machines appropriate. If using hardware NLB, requires investment.

A failover cluster provides high availability and redundancy, but doesn't spread the load. Only one server is live at any time, but the clustered application(s) can be moved to the other server very quickly.

A failover cluster also required shared (very reliable) storage that is independent of the clustered servers, e.g. a SAN.

    I would say:

NLB --> Simple implementation and supplies Load Balancing and Availability

FCS --> Harder implementation more dependencies

Nice article on the topic: http://blogs.technet.com/b/ucando365talks/archive/2014/04/15/adfs-high-availability-quick-reference-guide-for-administrators-implement-single-sign-on-for-office-365.aspx

    Personal choice would be NLB.

    Good luck with your choice!

    Nizar,

Please let us know what you came up in the form of recommendations.

How large is your implementation in terms of number of users (conncurrent)?

    Thank you,

    harihar
