Convert write-in product into existing product

I would like to find a way to take a write-in product entered into a quote and make it become an existing product from that point forward. Similar to how entering in a lead creates a new contact.

My company makes many custom products in addition to standard products. Because of this we utilize the write-in product feature. Occasionally the custom product will be ordered again and would like to simply just select the custom item from the existing products, just like I would any other standard product.

Is this able to be done? If so, is it able to be done without code?

    Hi Adam,

I think you can do this with a workflow that runs on the Quote Product. It should be pretty straight forward:

    1) Check, is it a write in product

    2) If yes, create a new Product record with any details from the quote product

    3) Possibly create a product price level, and update the product with the default price level.

I think you'd still need to publish the product record in order to add it to a product, but this will get you started with most of the details prefilled.

Hope this helps! I'd appreciate if you'd mark this as Answering your question.

    Thanks,

      Aiden

Thank you very much for this, I'll give it a shot in just a few minutes. Before I do I have a question about price levels. We have 11 different price lists (person frustration aside), so how would this be dealt with?

A write in product could be entered for a customer at any of those levels. Do we need to enter in prices at their specific level and fill them in as we go? Do we use default (list) prices and then have the quote calculate the customer price based on a formula?

Just to add, in case of Quote - write a plugin on quotedetail entity create event and then you can create the same product.

Also you dont enter pricelist in write-in product. You need to enter the value in quotedetail itself.

    Thanks,

RE: Convert write-in product into existing product

While I greatly appreciate your advice/insight writing a plugin is out of the question for me. My skillset is nowhere close to this level. I'm fairly impressed with what I have been able to do thus far, given that I have never done an implementation before. However I am at a point where just a few small things, such as this, are left to be solved.

Being able to account for the various price lists would solve the issue. I understand that you don't write it into the actual quote product area. You click on it and it opens up the detailed page which allows you to enter all of the other items, such as description, etc, etc. I just don't know how to account for all the price lists.
