What is a typical numbering system for Item numbers?

We are integrating to Dynamics from Quickbooks. We are trying to come up with a good system for numbering our items. Is there a common numerical series that is best practice? Our items we have components, bottles, labels, etc. and non inventory items. Is there a best practice in numbering Items?

A few tips:

- Keep it simple stupid

- All items use the same number of characters

- Avoid using letters that can be confused with numbers, such as O, I, and L

- Keep item numbers short, but not so short that they could be mistaken for other numbers

- Do not use special characters such as comma, -, /, *, or |

- Consider using one or two prefix letters. Letters will help further distinguish your item numbers from other numbers. It makes it easier to filter as well, such as PK0001 for packaging and RM0001 for raw materials.
