Geo coordinates for ship-to addresses with What 3 Words

We looking to accept What 3 Words for customer ship-to addresses instead of a standard address.

We can do an API call to the What 3 Words service to get the geo-coordinates for this address.  

Is there any standard or better way to hold latitude and longitude values in BC? 

If the latitude, longitude and What 3 Words fields all have to be custom fields, then is that going to cause issues with validation as the main address fields will be blank?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
