Upgrade to GP2015 Basic System

We have a client with a very basic system - GP, RM, PM, CM, Payroll (CDN) and using IM for external data import from custom application.  Have been using the system since 1996 so this is a long time, well established client.

Situation

We are starting to work on their update to GP2015 and we have a completely separate UAT Environment for both the SQL Server and the Workstation.

To kick off the process the IT department cloned the current GP2013 Server and create new VM machine.   They did the same for the testing workstation.

There are no access or operational issues with the UAT from the Server or from the UAT Workstation

There are two company databases

Issues Encountered

After confirming that the current version as cloned worked in the UAT, we dowloaded from Partnersouce the GP2015 RTM R2 DVD as well as the latest KB3066933 (June 25)

We installed the GP2015 and got version 14.00.0725

When we run Utilities we get a Problem with installation message and a refer to the UNINSTALL for more details.

Looking at the DUINSTALL in the GP2015 folder we find:

PROD 0 does not support update from 12.00.1920
PROD 1911 does not support upgrade from 12.00.21
PROD 7131 does not support upgrade from 12.00.1905

First Solution

Instllation of the KB3066933 which results in version 14.00.0778

When we run the Utilities we get the same errors, less the message for PROD 1911

So when this failed, I uninstalled ALL OF GP2015 and

Second Solution

Downloaded the original GP2015 RTM DVD that results in 14.00.0524

Completed the installation - all the same errors.

Third Solution

Download all the service packs and install and test

KB0300074 as SP14.0.619 - 2/15/15 - fails PROD 0, 414, 1911, 6499, 7131

KB3063038 as SP14.00.0725 - 5/29/15 - fails PROD 0, 1911, 7131

QUESTION

What am I missing?  I can not think of anything else I have to do.  I have been doing update for years and this is one that I dont  get at all.

Unfortunately when it gets to a second page that often happens.  I liked the line of thinking and the suggestion in a lot of cases is very valid.

Continue to work in the community it needs to hear from everyone.

Sorry, the view that I was looking at didn't express that you had resolved the issue or what the resolution was...

RE: Upgrade to GP2015 Basic System

Thanks for the feed back - and while I have encountered this type of error message myself in the past.  This message said that PROD 0 - which the the DYNAMICS core and then PROD 7131 Canadian Payroll were the source of the problem.

If you check back a couple of posts you will find that the reason for the error was in fact that the GP2013 R2 database had been updated to the June 25th SP (12.00.1920) which as we learned is not compatible with the GP2015 R2 June 25th SP (14.00.0619)

All is good and we are up and running in the TEST environment.

RE: Upgrade to GP2015 Basic System

I  got similar errors on products that had been installed on a clients system but weren't upgraded.  Removing those items from the set file fixed my issue.  Hope it fixes yours.... The other thing is to look at the products you are currently using in the production environment and make sure that there aren't references in the dbupgrade table to those not in use.

    Thanks. G

lad you you got it working. FYI, when we apply updates we always backup the DBs, AND copy the GPxxxx folder AND the Dexterity folder before starting.  Backuping up the GPxxxx folder is handy as sometimes DIC files dont get copied to the "Backup...." folder and then your'e left scrambling to find the original DIC file to run modified forms/reports updates

RE: Upgrade to GP2015 Basic System

Here is a recap of what was required to fully resolve this situation.

A complete 'uninstall' of all GP2013 and GP2015 code files on the UAT client

A complete dump of the GP2013 databases as they were partially touched by the GP2015 update process - while not complete it was enough to change them.

A restore of the PRODUCTION database at the 12.00.1801 GP2013 R2 SP for 2014-15 Tax Updates (Canada)

Installation of base GP2015 R2 and SP from KB30300074 to end up with GP2015 R2 14.00.0619

Once all these tasks were complete I was sucessfully able to complete the update.  So the winner of the 'verified answer' has to go to NSANTIN as this was the final clue that solved the problem.  Seconds to Tim for getting a clear picture of the 'right update options' and of course to Beat for keeping me moving forward.

Key learning opportunity here is to be sure that you have a solid backup of your GP2013 environment prior to making any move forward and be sure to read all the warnings attached to the Service Packs - it proves that not all service packs are good for you.

    Thanks all.

    Bill,

I felt once into that trap while re-installing a GP full client on a prod workstation.. Unfortunately on the DB side when removing an applied patch, it's not going to roll-back the versions in the DU tables... only remove the files from the GP folders...

Since every update of GP can 'adjust' or add SQL objects for a new version, there is no real Go-back solution, except if you do it with a snap-shot of your DB's before the upgrade, which in most cases is useless when users already started to work with a new version.

RE: Upgrade to GP2015 Basic System

    Yes Bill,

That's the only viable path you can go... fiddling around withe DU tables is risky when it comes to minor release number changes for active modules..

I've had a situation where some of the modules in the DU tables were really outdated in the major version field and I just wiped them out from the tables, as they were not referring to anything actually in use.

There is when you catch some old installation of 3rd party that no one knows anymore about and doesn't even know when it was removed from the system.

Let use know how the next attempt goes..

RE: Upgrade to GP2015 Basic System

You are correct - as best I can tell - that you can not uninstall a Service Pack.  What I tried to do was to install GP2013R2 over the existing GP2013 installation - that did not work.

So the great thing about working in a UAT Environment - when everything goes wrong - wipe it out and start over.

That is what I am doing right now.  I am restoring from PRODUCTION  (GP2013R2 with SP's in place to .1801 Jan 2015 Tax Update Canada) and will post results when I have them.

RE: Upgrade to GP2015 Basic System

You cannot (at least that Im aware of) uninstall a service pack or goto a lower GP build. You can try to mess around with the DU00010/20 tables to try to force it but that will most likely cause more harm then good.

IMHO you need to wait until the next 2013 build, apply it, then proceed with the 2015 upgrade.
