Microsoft Dynamics CRM & Mac

Hi all,

I've recently begun temping for a company and it requires me spending a great deal of time using the companies CRM system. I've not used CRM before but i know a fair bit about computers.

Basically all of the computers within the company are Mac's and there is a head office with 4 or 5 regional offices. The company has a contract with a larger company which originally used Microsoft CRM, although they seem to be running a full windows based network. This requires our company to use it also.

Here's the main problem i think, despite seeing that safari does support MS CRM online, after logging on and starting the plugin, it launches in a window that i can only describe as a windows 95 version of internet explorer...and its terrible. Laggy, unresponsive and just hangs up every now again forcing windows to be closed and a lot of time wasted all in all. Plus we get 404's numerous times throughout the day and just seems to lose connection.

People are pulling their hair out over this, and no-one seems to want to speak out about it, or they don't know enough about it to figure out how to make it better!

I have been taking my windows laptop into work, and even this still launches a separate window with the windows 95-esque and remains slow and crappy. However i used a add-on for chrome and Firefox called IEtab, allowing me to paste the address for the CRM into my normal browser, and hey presto... some improvement! The IEtab add-on is not available for Mac though.

Now, if MS CRM is supported by mac, how do i get it to launch in Safari or Firefox on a Mac? Is this a setting set by the guys who set up the CRM in the larger company?

Currently, if i paste the CRM address into a browser in Mac or into a Windows PC without that add-on, i get the following message;

"Access Denied

You do not have sufficient access rights or privileges to perform this action."

So how do i get the CRM to work in a normal browser? I'm guessing i need to talk to an admin but i'm not entirely sure what is possible, and also is there not a dedicated application for MS CRM or is it purely a plug-in based database?

Sorry if its a bit of a long post but someone needs to do something about it! Any extra info needed ill try and reply quickly.

Thanks!

    Hi Gordo,

which version of CRM you using? you seem to mention CRM Online at one point.

If you usign CRM online, is not normal you getting access denied or 404 errors. Dynamics CRM 2011 does support Safari and works well, if you have an on-premise deployment you need RU12 for x-browser compatibility.

My recommendation is depending how important is CRM in the company, you should contact a partner to help you with the current issues, they will be able to provide you guidance and transfer technical knowledge.

    Hope this helps.

RE: Microsoft Dynamics CRM & Mac

Thank you both, i have been browsing past posts relating to using CRM on Mac, but like i said i'm not that familiar with it myself.

Well i have a feeling that it is CRM Online but cannot determine myself the actual version or how old it is; the Online version is cloud based whereas the On Premise is stored internally within the companies main server right? I could definitely find out when i'm back in the office tomorrow.

They told me at work that when they decided to go with Macs, the guys who had already made the decision to use whatever version of the CRM said that Mac compatibility had just been developed but was not fully compatible or something?

I have always been told that VPN's using Mac can be tricky to say the least and don't get on well with stuff like Outlook, not to mention anyone that wants to work from home and has a windows machine cannot access the fileservers without being a nerd.

I've been reading about Outlook integration with the CRM, but can you also produce reports or any document you like by setting up the correct queries from the CRM? Everything is done at the moment in a manual fashion; searching the database or spreadsheet and filling things out either by copy and pasting or typing.

    Thanks again

P.S They have been upgrading the network with Red Sophos boxes and a UTM in the main office, is this just a security thing or going to benefit the CRM in any way?

we connect via a URL like this https:\\storefront.xxxx.com

then the internet explorer launches with a url like this https:\\crm.xxxxx.com

RE: Microsoft Dynamics CRM & Mac

    Hello,

Based on the URL you posted and your mention of deploying Sophos RED you are using an on-premise version of Dynamics CRM. Most likely through VPN and probably via terminal services/remote desktop (a screenshot may help confirm this). Not an ideal configuration and I am sure it is quite painful for you and the other users.

The experience will be greatly improved by ensuring CRM is on at least UR12 (Update Rollup 12) which provides official Safari browser support. I would recommend UR14 as it is the latest update. Going with UR12 will eliminate the need to use terminal services (depending on how the network is configured). You can find the version number by going to File, Help, About Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Here is the list of current rollup versions: support.microsoft.com/.../2555051

It is possible to directly access CRM outside of terminal services and VPN, but again, depends on network configuration and security. IFD (Internet Facing Deployment) is what we recommend to all of our on-premise customers as it provides the best user experience. As mentioned by others, this option depends on configuring proper security.

    2600644 Update Rollup 8 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 - May 3, 2012 5.0.9690.2243

It would appear that would be the problem then.

Last question; How easy is it to upgrade and i assume the updates are free? Is it server side or do all clients need to be updated?

Thanks for the help guys, polite and very knowledgeable!  Although you confused me at the start by saying i need RU12 haha....Google didn't have a clue!

RE: Microsoft Dynamics CRM & Mac

There is usually both a server and client side update. Since most of your users are on Mac's and Safari browser, there will be no need to update the clients, only the server. The client side updates are for those users that have the Outlook client/plugin installed (for Windows users only).

    Here is Update Rollup 12:

    support.microsoft.com/.../2795627

    Here is Update Rollup 14:

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Upgrading from UR8 to UR12 or 14 should be a very simple and painless process.

Note that UR15 is due to be released probably any day now. And, to perhaps add to the confusion, CRM 2013 will be released, most likely, within the next month or so. CRM 2013 is a pretty big change and will require a more detailed upgrade than going with UR14 or UR15.

Good luck! Let us know how things work out.
