What database does MS Dynamics 365 use to store its entities and records?

Does CRM use its own database?

What database does MS Dynamics 365 use to store its entities and records? Default entities like Accounts, Contacts, etc. as well as customized ones.

Is it SQL Server or does CRM use its own custom database? I didn't find much information anywhere regarding where exactly this data is being stored.

Is the database different for online vs on-premise?

I have been asked this question three times now and I just say that it has its own database, and then I regret saying it because i don't know the answer.

    Hi Jerminator,

    Thank you for your query.

MSD365 Online stores the data such as entities and records into the Azure backbone on azure SQL DB and Cosmos DB.

For the D365 On Premise the data is stored on the compatible versions of SQL server with Dynamics 365, below

MS Dynamics 365 use SQL database to store the entities like Accounts, Contacts, custom entities, etc.

For Dynamics 365 online, the underlying technology used is Azure SQL Database. (Ref: Back up and restore environments)

For Dynamics 365 on-premise, it can be installed on one of the SQL Server versions listed in the link below.
