Lot Expiry Dates

When we receive from a Vendor using their Lot# and Expiry Date, and they send multiple shipments from their same Lot, why does GP not recognize the Lot# on a subsequent receiving and apply the same Expiry Date?

Is it normal GP functionality that requires an Expiry Date every time?
