Understanding capability of Microsoft Sustainability Manager

Dear all,

I am currently exploring the trial version of Microsoft Sustainability Manager to evaluate its features and capabilities. During my initial assessment, I found it highly effective for managing quantitative data related to environmental parameters, specifically energy consumption, emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3), water usage, and waste management.

While these features align with environmental reporting requirements, I would like to understand the broader scope of the tool. Specifically, I am curious whether it is capable of managing and integrating other types of data typically disclosed in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reports. For instance, can the tool support data collection, tracking, and reporting for social and governance metrics such as:

  • Workforce demographics and diversity (e.g., gender, age, and other DEI metrics)
  • Employee health and safety performance (e.g., incident rates, training hours)
  • Community engagement and impact
  • Ethical business practices, governance policies, and compliance data

ESG lake is a standalone product (publicly called Sustainability Data Solutions for Fabric).
It compliments MSM (Sustainability Manager) and there are some integrations specifically around external reporting (you can import ESG metrics/facts into MSM external reporting based on data in SDSF) to prepare your assessment for a specific report year.
In the future more and more integration scenarios will be supported.
S&G metrics are currently only available in SDSF, but this is on the short-term roadmap for MSM as well.

Understanding capability of Microsoft Sustainability Manager
Thank you for the response to my previous question regarding the capabilities of Microsoft Sustainability Manager. The information and the linked blog post were very helpful in broadening my understanding.
After reviewing the provided content, I noticed that the blog primarily highlights the capabilities of Project ESG Lake as part of Microsoft Fabric, emphasizing its ability to create a centralized ESG data estate, standardize data across various sustainability categories, and support advanced analytics. While this is fascinating and aligns with broader ESG data management needs, I’m curious to know how it relates specifically to Microsoft Sustainability Manager.
Could you kindly clarify the following:
    1. Is ESG Lake an integrated feature of Microsoft Sustainability Manager, or is it a separate tool within Microsoft Fabric?
    2. If ESG Lake is distinct from Sustainability Manager, to what extent can these two solutions integrate or complement each other to support comprehensive ESG reporting?
    3. Are there specific governance and social metrics (e.g., workforce demographics, DEI data, community engagement metrics) that can be managed directly within Microsoft Sustainability Manager, or is this functionality primarily driven by ESG Lake?
Your insights on these points would be greatly appreciated. It will help me better understand how to approach my evaluation and implement the right tools for comprehensive ESG reporting.

Microsoft Sustainability Manager has expanded capabilities to support a comprehensive ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) data estate. Along with managing environmental parameters, it can also handle broader ESG metrics, including social and governance data:
