Hi Team,

any idea how to kill/stop the process if we have started the copy process of a company in LIVE. for example one our client wanted to make a copy of their live environment in NAV and we started the process, in case if the process is taking way too long and may be in the hung stage, then how can we kill that process / stop it and is there any way to know if it will impact the live environment if we stop / kill the copy process.

Another question, what are the steps to take a back up in case if the copy process fails.

Thank you.

I have the same question (0)

Hi, In addition, there is a more thorough method, just restart the instance, so that all operations will be terminated.

Personally, I do not recommend this approach. You can set the Timeout to control the running time of the process. If it exceeds, an error will be reported.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

Stopping the service will do the job, but then you will have to wait for SQL server to finish its job also.

Wait for some time and then start service.

I would recommend to restore the backup and create a new service, which would be much faster than copying a company and blocking the resources.

Thanks ZHU for the response. A follow up questions is in case if we have started the copy process and it has already taken 6 to 7 hours, if we stop the service at that time, will it have any impact on the main company /  database?

We tested the copy process in our Dev and it took 8 hours of time and we are assuming it will be a little longer in Prod but if things go beyond 12 hours and at that point if we stop the service what kind of impact we need to be aware of.

Thanks Manish for the response. Do you have any steps for the process you have mentioned.

The copy process we are following will be done in the after hours over the weekend so we will have full resources.

    hi

If you have started a copy process of a company in the live environment in Dynamics NAV and it is taking too long or has become unresponsive, there are a few options to stop the process:

Use the Windows Task Manager to end the process: You can use the Windows Task Manager to end the process. In Task Manager, select the process and click "End Task". This will terminate the process, but be aware that this may cause data loss or corruption if the process was not completed correctly.

Use the Dynamics NAV Administration Shell to stop the service: You can use the Dynamics NAV Administration Shell to stop the service. This will stop the copy process and prevent any further data from being copied. You can then investigate the reason for the delay and resume the process if necessary.

Before stopping the copy process, you should evaluate the potential impact on the live environment. If the process is taking a long time but is still running, it may be safe to let it continue. However, if you need to stop the process, be sure to perform a full backup of the live environment before doing so to minimize the risk of data loss or corruption.

To take a backup in case the copy process fails, follow these steps:

Open the Dynamics NAV Administration Shell and connect to the server.

Run the following command to create a full backup of the live environment:

    Backup-NAVDatabase -DatabaseName <DatabaseName> -BackupFilePath <BackupFilePath>

Replace <DatabaseName> with the name of the live database and <BackupFilePath> with the path where you want to save the backup file.

Once the backup is complete, you can attempt to resume the copy process or restore the live environment from the backup if necessary.

Note that taking a backup during the copy process may increase the amount of time it takes to complete. Additionally, be sure to store the backup file in a secure location to prevent unauthorized access or data loss.

Hi, I'm not sure, the process of duplicating a company in NAV is calling the standard function below. If you force a break, I suspect that part of the data in the database has already been generated, you can open the database to check.

    COPYCOMPANY Function (Database)

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics-nav/copycompany-function--database-

In the database, this part below is the company name.

    Hi All,

    Thank you for your responses.

We were able to successfully copy the company from the live environment which took around 8 to 9 hours to complete. We had our back up plan if things did not work out.

One other option that was very useful and can help other if they have a big database to copy from is that they should increase the CPU and memory for the time being which will allow the process to run faster and revert back to same once process is completed.
