"Unknown Error" attempting backup - GP 2013 - Server 2008

I have just finished the upgrade from GP 2010 to GP 2013 and migrated everything over to Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2012. After much persuasion, all things are finally falling into line. However, today I have attempted a backup within Dynamics.

Upon selecting backup and picking a location/file_name (any location and any name) and then clicking OK, I am met with a quick flash to "Backing Up Company... Please Wait" which is immediately replaced with "Unknown Error."

I am on the server that is doing all portions of the work (Dynamics/SQL/Domain hosting) and am logged in as Administrator account with SA to Dynamics.

I can still backup without issue through the SQL Management system, but would prefer (for obvious reasons) if I could backup from within Dynamics.

Any assistance or ideas? Has anyone else landed here and survived? I'm thinking it is a permission issue with the 'sa' user and being server 2008, but I cannot find that option.

Thanks!

    Soma,

Unfortunately, I had dug through both of these and they did not offer a positive result. I appreciate the offer though. Was able to solve through a hinting private message and some digging.

    Will post solution.

    Thanks!

I have never faced this issue earlier. I will keep updating you if I find any solution regarding the same.

    I received this message:

    "Reply by Natarajan Sankaranarayanan

please make sure that you have enough space before taking the backup.

open event log during error occurrence, which may help you to give certain idea."

This got me thinking about the fact that I am running Win Server 2008 and that I am likely to have forgotten to set something. Steps to resolution:

I checked Event Viewer and under Application, I saw two errors with each event. A "failed to create. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.)." (EVENT ID 18204 ) and

a "BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE DYNAMICS. Check the backup application log for detailed messages." (EVENT ID 3041)

This tells me that I have permissions set improperly, or, the actual truth, that a different user than what I was expecting (I was expecting my pc administrative account) was actually performing the work.

The solution is to adjust the Security permission to the desired folder for the SQL user. Give this user full control and you should be fine. My user was named sql because that is what I named it during install... yours will most likely be different.

A way to test this solution if you are uncertain of the correct user to apply permissions to, just give the Everyone group full access (temporarily) in order to test.

Thanks all and good luck out there.

    Hi,

Below is one fix I just posted over at
    https://community.dynamics.com/gp/f/32/t/19337/reply?ReplyToContentTypeID=0&GroupToJoin=58

I'm copying it here just for your convenience, as follows:

I realize this is an old post, but fyi, Dynamics is incorrectly defaulting to backing up to "..\Program Files\whatever" . That won't work due to Windows security.

Instead, manually edit the path to reflect "..\ProgramData\whatever" (note there's no space between Program and data). That will work. In GP v10, a simple and fast to type path I liked to use was "C:\ProgramData\MBS\DYNGP\Backup\<yourDBname>\".

Likewise, you could select any other path (except "..\Program Files\whatever") where you have sufficient permissions and it should work as well.

    Regards . . .
