Hi D365 Community,

My client is looking for a way to automatically populate the Item Number based on the External Item Number in Dynamics 365, similar to how it works in NAV for them now. Are there any possible alternative of having this requirement achieved without customization? I was trying to to find a solution but the table does not seems to be able..

Thank you,
Luiza

Hi there! Good morning, evening, or afternoon - depending on where you are :) Hope you are well today!

In Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, there isn't a direct out-of-the-box feature to automatically populate the Item Number based on the External Item Number in the Sales Order Line, as it works in Dynamics NAV. However, there are a few alternative approaches you can consider without heavy customization:

    1. Use Cross-Reference Numbers
    • Dynamics 365 allows you to set up Cross-Reference Numbers for items, which can act as external item numbers.
    • To configure:
      • Navigate to Product Information Management > Products > Released Products.
      • Select the product and go to Cross-References.
      • Add the external item number and associate it with the product.
    • When entering the external item number in the Sales Order Line, the system can automatically resolve it to the corresponding Item Number.
    2. Enable Product Search by External Item Number
    • You can enable the Search Name or External Item Number fields to make it easier for users to find and select the correct item.
    • To configure:
      • Go to Product Information Management > Setup > Product Search.
      • Ensure that the external item number is included in the search criteria.
    3. Data Import with External Item Numbers
    • If you're importing sales orders, you can use the Data Management Framework to map external item numbers to internal item numbers during the import process.
    • Create a mapping in the data entity to translate external item numbers to the corresponding internal item numbers.
    4. Leverage Power Automate
    • If manual entry is still required, you can use Power Automate to create a flow that checks the external item number entered in the Sales Order Line and automatically updates the Item Number field.
    5. Consider Minimal Customization
    • If none of the above options fully meet your needs, a small customization might be required. For example:
      • Create a plugin or workflow that triggers when an external item number is entered in the Sales Order Line.
      • The plugin can look up the corresponding Item Number and populate it automatically.

While these approaches can help achieve your requirement, the Cross-Reference Numbers method is the closest alternative to the NAV functionality and requires no customization.

This would be a simple customisation
