Utility Billing

We are trying to come up with a way to bill for storm water based on the square footage.  Currently, we bill for it based on a flat fee service code.  Is there a way to have a code based on a custom formula?  Does anyone else have a solution for this?

 thanks

Well, I suppose it depends what you're using for billing.  RM?  If so, how about doing recurring billing (a batch with a recurring frequency).  I imagine that the square footage of your customers doesn't change much.  If it did, you just change the transaction setup to be billed. When you create the RM batch, just choose a frequency appropriate to your circumstances, like "monthly".

If you're using SOP, a little tougher.  Could definutely be custom where when you select the item it gets the quantity from the customer.  Custom, though.  How about the Contract Admin module?  If you're on Advanced Mgmt licensing or own Contract Admin, you could use that to setup a "contract" for everyone you want to bill.  Would work really slick!  Bills through SOP, and has pretty good revenue recognition too!  Contract could be setup to autorenew!

Please update this post when you figure something out, and share your learned experience with the community.

    Good luck.

If you're a utlity company, you might want to check with Cogsdale (www.cogsdale.com).  They specialize in utilities and governmental agencies.  I've worked with them and they are a class act.

I agree with Frank. Utility billing is not something that you can do with a few workaronds here and there. There is much more to it than meets the eye.

Scott - noticed your post and thought I may be able to assist. We are the manufactures of a Microsoft based Utility billing software solution. What your asking about is (RUBs billing) Ratio Utility Billing which allows you to calculate bills based on a formula like square footage our system offers this cabability plus a whole lot more.

You can download a free evaluation copy of the product from our website at www.waterbill.com

We would be happy to discuss your needs a create a affordable solution for you. Please let me know if you would like to discuss in detail.

     Regards,

What we can do here is use the consumption Override feature or the Levy Override feature. On each account they would have to setup a service code that would have no rates associated with it. Just a grid code and a gl account number. once they attach that service code to the accounts they can then to to the Utility Master Maintenance Services screen (blue arrow on service code) and in here they can set the levy override flag to be always. Then set a dollar amount that will always be charged on the account. The amount can be different for each account set up with this service code. The reason is just a description field that can be filled in for information purposes. They could also use the Consumption Override amount. For this they would put the rate of $5.00 per unit in the service code calculation and in the Utility Master Maintenance Services screen, again change the Consumption Override flag to say Always. Instead of the dollar amount, however, they could enter in the consumption amount, or the square footage, or the number of units for the account. I've asked Scott to please update his test company and try this out. Understanding that the test company is in version 9 and not 10 he could set up the service code, and put it on a few accounts for testing purposes. As long as there is NO posting done to the accounts for this service code - we should be able to delete it after with no ill effects.

The El Dorado Utility billing software can bill based on Ratio Billing (Sq footage and number of occupants). For more information check out www.waterbill.com
