How to BULK copy one custom field to another field - Same entity

We have migrated our data from sales force and we had a plugin that stored a field on every record. approx 1.4m contact records.

We need to copy this field to another field that a plugin installed.

Can anyone help on how we can copy a very simple field on the same entity to another field.

We cannot: edit the managed field and need to do mass update.

Thanks

Although you can export your records to excel and copy the column values before re-importing, for over a million records this isn't practical. The most effective option would be to commission a script that does this using the SDK. It would retrieve the records I batches and update one at a time. See msdn.microsoft.com/.../gg309282.aspx

Another option would be to use KingswaySofts SSIS toolkit if you have the skills - this is free for a single developer one off update.  See www.kingswaysoft.com/.../ssis-integration-toolkit-for-microsoft-dynamics-crm

    Hope this helps,

    Scott

    Hi Scott

My technical experience is limited when it comes to items such as SSIS and scripting will not be possible.

I have scribe running, but the update is extremely slow. I have a CRM 2013 to CRM 2013 connector that simply copy's the field from one to another.

But it is processing at an extremely slow rate of about 130k records every 24 hours. i tried batch processing on 2000 records, then lowered to 1000 and then to 500 and it seems to match the same speed. I even did 80 at one point but the same result.

I think Dynamics is throttling me. Do you have any suggestion on batch process through put? Everywhere online people are getting millions of records through with far more complex inserts, updates etc.

This task should be a no brainer, thus why i am turning to find a solution within Dynamics itself, such as a workflow. Although that worries me as it might kick off 1.4m workflows!!

    Thanks

Right - I wouldn't use workflows either since this will take even longer than Scribe.

If you are finding that you have a low throughput with Scribe - check if you have any other workflows or plugins that are registered on the contact entity - try disabling them temporarily to see if that helps. Throughput is throttled yes, but you should be getting much more than 1.5 records a second!
