Migration CRM 2011 On-premise to 2016 online

Hi,

I'm performing a crm migration from a 2011 on-premise to 2016 online. Here are my steps, what do you think about please?

Start : CRM 2011 (Windows Server 2008 R2) with SQL 2008 R2 (Windows Server 2008 R2)

1 - In-place migration from CRM 2011 to 2013 (already done)

2 - For CRM 2015, Windows server 2008 R2 is not supported so i need to install new servers : 2016 and 2016 with SQL 2014.

I export my Databases (Orga_MSCRM and MSCRM_config) and restore them into the new SQL server. Then, CRM 2015 installation with an existing organization.

3 - In-place migration from CRM 2015 to 2016

4 - 2016 to 2016 online?? I don't know how to process. I found some tools to perform it, but i prefer to do it alone if it's possible. Do you have any advices or
recommendations?

Thank you,

Fabien

Microsoft is currently beta testing an Online migration tool as part of LCS for CRM/D365.  I'd look for that, it's going to be your only natural way to get online without using something like a 3rd party tool, or simplifying your data enough to just import via Excel.

But if you're going to import via Excel, there's no real reason to go through the upgrade process.

Has the Life cycle Migration Service been released in the Uk yet?

If you are planning to use a third party tool, I would consider SSIS with Kingswaysoft.

I am not sure how large your database is, but there is not much you can't do with SSIS.

The normal route we used to work on these types of migration are as follows:

    CRM 2011 -> 2013 SP1 -> 2015 -> 2016.

Since you are not able to do in-place to 2015, the approach you have written down makes the most sense, unless you want to run an upgrade on the actual Windows Servers.

For upgrading On-Prem to Online, SSIS would still be required, since you need a Source and Destination.

The tricky part about this is the mapping of the users (and teams).

You will need to create a mapping table that will contain the unique identifiers of the users in your On-Prem environment and Online, so that you will be able to set the ownership, and creation dates of the records.

LCS would be the first choice, but not sure regarding availability, your timeline and whether you want to use a Beta product for this migration, although it is already in public preview.

    Good luck.

    Hi

Does anyone have more information on this? I cannot find much on the internet about it but it looks like it has real potential.

I am particularly interested in the script components to spin up the 3 servers and various CRM instances in Azure if anyone has guidance on how this could be done separately? This could be a huge time saver.

    Thanks

    Rob

What is required to access this tool in LCS?

When I login the only product I am shown in the dropdown is for Dynamics NAV. No Dynamics CRM option as shown in this video.

    Thank you!
