What is a practical procedure (step by step) to migrate from 4.0 to 2011?

We are using CRM 4.0 On-Premise and would test CRM2011 On-Premise on a virtual machines.

I have ready VM with SQL2008, AD (new domain), IIS, Reporting Services, CRM Server and all is runing fine with sample data.

What should I do first to import data and customisation from "old system"?

This is a supported migration method so normally everything should go fine eventually.

However there are some small additional steps..

Details are provided by Microsoft here: technet.microsoft.com/.../gg554767.aspx

If you have x64 there are some more steps : technet.microsoft.com/.../gg554706.aspx

    Hopefully that helps :-)

    Re: Migrating CRM 4.0 to 2011 On-Premise

    Hello Sven,

I have a fresh install of CRM2011 on a separate machine with new SQL2008. There is one organisation in CRM Deployment Manager with sample data.

Actually we have CRM4.0 on another server (with SQL2005) and would test fresh CRM2011 with importing data from 4.0. I don't want to use third party solutions :-)

Please, let me know if I'm wrong:

Step1. Back Up of CRM 4.0 database

Step2. Export from CRM 4.0 customisations

Step3. Create new organisation (testdb1) in CRM2011 Deplyment Manager

    Step4. Import CRM4.0 database into SQL2008 to new testdb1_MSCRM

Step5. Create new Users in CRM2011

    Step6. Import customisation

    Step7. ???

    Kind regards,

    Krzysztof

    Re: Migrating CRM 4.0 to 2011 On-Premise

Here is a nice article which describes some of the steps (it's from crm4 to crm2011 online but still relevant). www.powerobjects.com/.../powermove-%E2%80%93-moving-crm-4-0-on-premise-to-crm-2011-online

Are you planning on upgrading your CRM4 environment of are you going from scratch on the new CRM2011 environment.

You should just be able to export your customization but you might need to convert your js files, plugins are the way they are used in CRM2011 is also different.

Here is another good blogpost: community.dynamics.com/.../crm-4-to-crm-2011-upgrade.aspx
