Hello All,

I’ve got a customer with RMS and their database is FULL. The database reads 4GB and some change. So my question is where do I start looking to SAFLEY free up some space? The item catalog seems to be relatively under control with under 10k items. The system has been in place for just over 2 years with 2 locations and around 80 transactions each on a busy day. Should we be looking to archive transactions or some another part of the database that could hogging up space.

Thanks for all your help!

Adam, its never really recommended to remove anything from RMS.  That being said, old Journal, Transaction, and TransactionEntry records are where to start as they take up be bulk of the data, but then you loose the ability to report on sales history.  Retail Realms makes an archiving tool that can help with this.

As a better alternative, Microsoft released SQL Server 2008 Express R2 which bumps update database size limitation to 10GB.  It is not officially supported unless the customer is running RMS 2.0 SP3, but we have used it successfully with many versions of RMS.

    Hope this helps.

    Adam,

Alternatives to freeing up some room (if not ready to upgrade to SQL 2008 R2 or purchase a 3rd party solution) include backing up your existing store database; creating a new database (you'll need to name it something other than your existing db) using your existing store .bck as the source to restore from.  Once restored as a new database  you can delete transactions, or purge history through a date range.  This will maintain your current inventory, customers, suppliers, etc...

By switching between databases, the old database can be used for historical reports, lookups etc...

Lastly, if you are using HQ - Removing inactive worksheets will also free up room.
