Stock Reservations in combination with Advanced Warehouse in D365 Finance & Operations + Master Planning

Good afternoon !

I have two scenario's concerning Stock reservations, and I am curious if you have (had) similar scenario's and how you have solved this.

Scenario 1
Our goal is that we only would like to make reservations of stock when the replenish window of an item is reached. I did some research, but it seems that this is not possible in Dynamics. The only way would be to use the release to warehouse job, but in that case you should release based on itemgroup, and it would require customizations on the 'process waves', to prevent that it generates work weeks before the delivery is required, and to make sure the system still consolidates the products in one shipment to the customer. Our IT partner told us that this customization is not possible to customize unfortunately. Does anyone manage to implement a similar stock reservation system in D365 FO ?

Scenario 2
If Scenario 1 is not possible, we would like to use a more simple form of reservation. We would like stock to be automatically reservated, but if an order comes with an earlier delivery we would like existing reservations to be re-evaluated and cleared based on f.e. replenish time.

Example:

- Stock 500 pcs. Replenish time 10 days
- Sales Order comes in for 500 pcs delivery 1-1-2022. Autoreservation reservates whole stock (for more than a year!)
- Sales order comes in for 100 pcs delivery 01-01-2021. MRP says it is not on stock, so you will need to buy new ones. However: we could just deliver from stock and replenish in time.

Is there a way to accomplish this? I find it hard to believe that we only can use auto reservation or manual reservation. This is very limited for many companies.

I hope you can help me with some ideas on how to accomplish this or to hear how you solved this.

Thanks

Hello Willem.  Seems that you are correct regarding the inability to do this using standard Microsoft code - hopefully another customer or partner can chime in with some recommendations on a customization.

On the other hand, I would encourage you to see if this topic has been suggested on the Ideas site.  If not, please consider taking the time to post your suggestions.  The product group regularly reviews these suggestions for new features that get implemented into the product.  experience.dynamics.com/.../

Hi Taylor. I will do that. Thank you for your suggestion.

    Hi Willem,

Without doing a customisation, the best I can think is to use the Automatic release of sales orders job to Reserve and Release orders, but only when you need to the warehouse to start thinking about picking them. That job can use for than the Item group to base the release on. For example, if the Ship date of your order lines is accurate, you could configure it to only Release/Reserve orders which should be shipped today (or tomorrow, or today +2, today +3 etc).

In this way, stock is not reserved until the order is released (unless a manual reservation is done), which means that the orders which should be shipped first will get the stock in preference to orders which will be shipped later, regardless of when the orders were created.

Also, I'm not sure that MRP is looking at Reservations the way you describe. In that scenario, after you create the Sales order for the 1st Jan 2021, MRP will create a Planned purchase order to arrive in time for the 1st Jan 2022.
