Changing SA password

Posted on by

Our SA password and system password were the same in GP 2010 and needed to be changed.

I have changed the system password from within GP and understand that "Out of the box there is nothing that uses the Dynamics GP system password automatically, it's simply an additional safeguard to get into 'sensitive' setup windows where you might want an additional level of security.  " quoted from another post.

I cannot access the"Planning for Security in Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0" document, as suggested in this KB. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873985  which would seem to have the info I am looking for...

Question: once I change the SA password in SQL Mgmt, what is the list of items that I need to check to make sure that no functionality breaks?  I'm fairly new to SQL & GP so I would be appreciative more detailed answers.

Thanks for your help!!

    Nothign in GP has to change. If you have any SSRS reports or custom applications the connection strings may need to be changed to reflect the new 'sa' password.As would any scheduled jobs that may have been hardcoded with the 'sa' password.

    In order to change the "SA" password, you need to change it from SQL Management Studio specifically because you can not change it from Dynamics GP (unlike DYNSA User, which should be reset from Dynamics GP) As you can see below, if you go to the Setup User Screen in Dynamics GP, the password is not accessible

    Regarding other items that need to be checked after changing the "SA" password could be the following;

    • ODBC Data Source: in case the data source verifies the authenticity of the login using SQL Server authentication (SA User)
    • Any jobs that uses the (SA User) as well
    • Any backup or maintenance plans
    Hope this helps
