Tie leads to opportunities

Good Evening all, I am trying to figure out what I a doing wrong. I have created a lookup field for leads in the opportunity entity. The field works and will place the lead in the opportunity, but it will not save - I have also tried using the the originating lead field as well. Is there a way that I can use 1 lead for multiple opportunities?

You can use one lead for multiple opportunities, but a lot depends on your business process.

When you 'Qualify' a Lead, it creates an Opportunity record for you. If you have to link the same lead to a different opportunity, you will have to first 'Reactivate' it and then 'Qualify' it.

The reason I say a lot depends on your business process is this - Suppose you have already qualified a lead, and you now have an opportunity for a customer, you have linked the existing lead to the opportunity through the 'Originating Lead' lookup. Now, you reactivate the lead to create another opportunity - For this, lets say you add some additional notes on the Leads form. The information is applicable to all the Opportunities created out of the Lead, as this is the same originating lead!

The other reason, why I would say you need to have one lead per opportunity is it gives the customer a right measure for closed loop marketing

Thank you for your guidance. I understand the process a little better. If I may, I have a couple of more questions regarding the answer. First let me set the stage: The reason for this question comes from reporting, I have added a new field in the lead entity that creates an auto number upon create called project number. I have also created a new field in the opportunity entity called sales order number (this is a text field that is populated by a person). naturally I would like to create a report that allows me to group by project number then see the 1-many relationship to the sales order numbers.

now for the process - my initial idea was to create the lead (generating the project number) qualify the lead on the first opportunity. Then when a new opportunity arose, I would create an opportunity tying to the lead with the originating lead field. then I was planning on using the originating lead field to then report: originating lead - project name - Sales order - customer with the idea that the originating lead to sales order is a 1-many relationship (create a pivot table)

All fields have been added to the respective fields and work (except) the originating lead  field looks up the lead, fills in the project number as expected, but upon exit deletes the project number. I am a bit baffled -

    Questions:

for the originating lead field to work, does the lead need to be active?

does the originating lead field only store the topic? (as opposed to the project number field that it populates)

do I have the correct process in mind (based on the process statement from the last post, the answer is not really, but I wanted to check to see if mine would work)

Finally, am I doing something incorrectly regarding the field and the field needs to be modified based on the scenario.

Thank you for your help on this.
