Modifying table structure (alternative)

Hi.

I am relatively new to GP.

I need to extend field length of  RM_Customer_MSTR table.

I need to extend field CUSTNMBR field from 15 to 40 characters.

I am working on some integration trough  eConnect and web services. My client

wants to customer number in GP be GUID from web site.

I read on this forum that is not possible to change structure  and make some modification of GP existing table(at least not good idea what I totally agree).

I consider using DUOS or make my custom table for storing additional data.

Have you guys any suggestions what is my best option with your experience

,and does it will be possible to populate this custom table trough eConnect,or web services?

Many Thanks.

Look at using "Extender", then if you use Smartconnect the Nodes are already created.

    Hi Ljubisa

You cannot change any existing Dynamics GP tables.  You can add new tables, or use existing tables. This will cause all kinds of headaches when it comes to upgrades and updates.

I would suggest you use the Internet Information window to store the GUID you want, so you can have a relationship between the GUID and the Dynamics GP Customer Number.

The Customer Number is a number that users can enter easily, a GUID would not be easy to enter.

    Thanks

    David

    Hi David.

    Many thanks for you advice.

End users would not enter GUID manually. It will be populated automatically trough eConnect and web services from web site.I will use Internet Information window like you said.In the future for some customization if I add new tables does it mean that I have certain problems during upgrading to newer version of GP or installing some updates?

The issue of users entering the GUID is not with the creation of the Customer master record, but with any future usage anywhere in the system. A random number does not make a good Customer ID.

If you add new tables, that does not cause any issues for upgrades. Customisations and third party ISV products add tables all the time (my products included).

You cannot change existing tables (unless they are yours) as then any upgrades for those tables will fail.

    Thank you David.

Now it is clear to me.
