Questions regarding Custom Activities Types

I ma created a custom activity type for and have a couple of questions which I can not find on the google (probably my bad terminology).

1. How can I check in a workflow if the regarding of an activity is a case? Is it as simple as checking the regarding (case) contains data.

2. How can I ensure that the custom activity can only be created for cases. Eg. The custom activity type can not be created on the contacts screen or the custom activity type can not have a contact as the regarding.

2. How to change the Icon of a custom activity that is displayed in the social pane?

3. Is there a way to do inline editing of a custom activity similar to a task?

    Hello,

    1. "How can I check in a workflow if the regarding of an activity is a case? Is it as simple as checking the regarding (case) contains data."

Yes, that's correct. In your condition, check if the 'Regarding (Case)' contains a Case with 'Contains Data'

    2. "How can I ensure that the custom activity can only be created for cases. Eg. The custom activity type can not be created on the contacts screen or the custom activity type can not have a contact as the regarding."

There's no good out-of-the-box mechanism to do this with only configuration, I would recommend a plug-in for this, that checks the field and throws an exception when it sees that a user is trying to specify a different entity as Regarding.

    3. "How to change the Icon of a custom activity that is displayed in the social pane?"

Open the customization for the Entity and click 'Update Icons' in the toolbar.

Select a 32x32 icon for it under 'Icon for Entity Forms' this one will be visible in the Activity Panel/Social Panel (the big panel in the middle)

Make sure to upload a webresource into your solution first , as you can only select existing web resources.

Also, try to make it a gray PNG icon, on a transparent background, as this would make it the most like other activity icons.

    4.  "Is there a way to do inline editing of a custom activity similar to a task?"

Unfortunately not in the current interface of v8.2 or in the web refresh of v9 but, this is coming in the new Unified Client.
