I've looked at these pages

and
http://dynamicserppros.com/manage-automatic-client-updates-microsoft-dynamics-gp/
but I'm having a hard time making it work. I did the latest upgrade for 2015 R2 over the weekend and attempted to do this, but it didn't work. My experience has been that the clients are unable to log in if they're not at the same version as the server. If I can't log in, how do I get the patch to deploy on client work stations?

I'm not talking about the OS... I've been thru the OS upgrade from XP to Win7 Enterprise, and we had experienced a lot of troubles with the GP clients, which remains a 32-bits apps only (thus the requirement of setting up the ODBC connection in 32-bits mode).
Win7 brought his whole new level of apps security that was a world of change vs. XP, and you may face again a similar issue with Win10... As I said, I've not been there yet to test the Win10 client platform.. I had created last year a W10 virtual machine to start testing the GP 2015R2 client, but our IT department shut that down claiming it was not compliant (and ready yet) for integration into our domain...
Not to argue, but there's been x64 versions since XP.
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how it could ever work...if I can't log in, how can the system tell me to run an update?
Aha... and here we go..
Sorry but I have only heard bad things so far when it comes to the Windows 10 platform with the GP client... remember that GP is a 32-bit apps..
I'm not yet setup to test with a Windows 10 environment, and as such I'd run the patch manually on each client system... I'm sorry, but my feeling is that the issue has something to do with the underlying OS release..
On Windows 7 Enterprise this works perfectly. Had used it for the past 6 years.
Yes, the link works OK.
Running Windows 10. I tried a right click > run as admin on my machine as a test and it didn't help. The client machines never prompted when it was run as a normal user
OK, so that at least validates the server folder side (share) is OK..
Did you try to run the URL from a user workstation with the user logged in ?
Is your local GP client marked to run in 'Administrator' mode ? what is your workstation OS version ?
Sorry for all the question, but need to validate all those settings..
Sorry, looks like the copy and paste cut it off
Here's a picture
(And that looks tiny. Suffice it to say that there is a \\ before the server)
If I run the command that's under "uncpath" it works fine
Carl,
I think the answer relies in your table entry... the above URL is not recognized by the GP client as a valid UNC path.. which needs to start with a double \\ .
If you would copy/paste that URL into a command line of windows, it would probably err out
In order to validate your link, just copy the field content 'UNCPATH' in the windows 'RUN' command (Win-key + R) and try to launch it from there...
3.6.16 1 \itstorage.domain.com\gp\2015R2\patches\MicrosoftDynamicsGP14-KB3134012-ENU.msp MicrosoftDynamicsGP14-KB3134012-ENU.msp 7717591.00000 4
Good.
So my next step would be to make sure that the GP client is launched in 'Admin' mode and has the proper rights to install apps in the program folder on the local system.
For the sake of validation, can you just post the table line that contains your client update definition ? it should be something like :
GP2013R2 YE-update 2015 0 \\yourGPserver\GP_Ressources\Installation\GP2013\GP\ServicePacks\MicrosoftDynamicsGP12-KB3122624-ENU.msp MicrosoftDynamicsGP12-KB3122624-ENU.msp
Yep, I have one line that has a "1" in the post column.
