Automatic upgrade of GP

I've looked at these pages

https://community.dynamics.com/gp/b/gpcharlesallen/archive/2009/12/11/using-automated-client-updates

and

http://dynamicserppros.com/manage-automatic-client-updates-microsoft-dynamics-gp/

but I'm having a hard time making it work.  I did the latest upgrade for 2015 R2 over the weekend and attempted to do this, but it didn't work.  My experience has been that the clients are unable to log in if they're not at the same version as the server.  If I can't log in, how do I get the patch to deploy on client work stations?

Make sure that the client workstations have access to the UNC path you specified.

    HI Carl,

The issue with the automatic client update is that the end-user that runs the GP client on the workstation side needs to have elevated privileges to run the GP client in order to do the upgrade ... When the 'old' GP client detects the need for an 'active' upgrade to be deployed, it will prompt the user asking if they want to apply the upgrade. They just need to answer YES.

Now reading from your question, it looks like you're wanting to deploy a major version change (lets say from 2013 to 2015R2). ? this is not going to work with automatic client updates.. This only works when you want to apply a service pack or patches. Sorry it that's what you wanted to do.

You can however create a deployment package for your new GP client version and ask the users to run that from a shared folder on the server.  A deployment package doesn't require any input from the end-user and contains all the modules you specified, the location path and take care of the ODBC link creation on the workstation side.

Check this older post to know how to prepare a package :

What is the error message the users get in the client workstation?

    RE: Automatic upgrade of GP

    Hi

Thanks for the detailed answer.  In this case, I was already on GP 2015R2 and just wanted to apply the year end patch, which as I read it, should be possible with the links I've posted.

What I experienced when trying a test was this:

Open GP and tell it to apply the patch on next launch, then specified the patch

    Upgraded the server

    After upgrade, launched the client.

After authentication, it tells me I'm not on the same version as the server and won't let me log in.

    Carl,

Can you please check in your DYNAMICS DB the content of this table :

-- validate which client update is set to 'push' on clients

    select * from syupdate

Please note if any entries has a value 1 in the field POST. If they are all 0, then no updates is 'active', thus no client will ask for the update.

Yep, I have one line that has a "1" in the post column.

    Good.

So my next step would be to make sure that the GP client is launched in 'Admin' mode and has the proper rights to install apps in the program folder on the local system.

For the sake of validation, can you just post the table line that contains your client update definition ? it should be something like :

    GP2013R2 YE-update 2015                   0 \\yourGPserver\GP_Ressources\Installation\GP2013\GP\ServicePacks\MicrosoftDynamicsGP12-KB3122624-ENU.msp                                                                                                                                                     MicrosoftDynamicsGP12-KB3122624-ENU.msp
