I'm trying to create an item that, when added to a sales order, decreases the total amount due. How can this be done? It's not possible to create an item with a negative price.
Why are you using Order, instead of Credit Memo ?
Can you let us know the reason behind doing so...
if you are providing discount to Customer , you can enter it into discount section in the lines.
if you are booking it against the invoice then you have to book Credit Memo.
It cannot be a credit memo because it's a sales order. Items are being sold to a customer. However, there is an item or two on the transaction that would discount the total of the transaction. The total is still a positive amount that the customer owes to the company.
Try Using Line Discount on the line section or Invoice discount.
Are discounts only percentages? And special pricing a full price of the item? Neither would work for what I'm trying to do because it would need to be a fixed amount off. For example, a discount of $2 off instead of %10 off.
You can put the amount on the invoice discount.
Unfortunately having a total discount amount for the invoice wouldn't work either. I need it to work like coupons where there are different amounts off available and they can add them to the order if they have the "item" number for them. In some cases, they are connected to specific items, in other case they are on their own for the whole transaction.
What is the error message you get when you post item with negative unit price ?
I tried posting one and it went through. Quantity is positive, unit price is negative.
If you can't do item, try using GL Account.
The sales order itself does allow using a negative price like in your example, but what I was trying to do was set up the item with a negative price (before the sale). The reason is because there are a set of hundreds of different coupons / rewards certificates with their own "item" numbers and amounts off that are set up ahead of time. Then the cashier will add them to the sale. They wouldn't necessarily know the amount off at the time of the sale because that's set up ahead of time.
Okay, you are talking about inputting negative price into the item master or the special sales price.
BC does not allow you to do that by default.
You will need to do customization on that.
