Business Units and security roles /privileges

Can anyone shed any light on a problem that is stumping me?

I have created a new business unit for one of our clients to see and update a selection of their leads in our CRM.  I used the salesperson profile in their business unit to give them access to the records having shared their records with a team in their BU that them are members of.

They can see and edit leads fine but they cannot add phone call records to these leads.  Everything is fine till they get to the save button then they are told they don't have sufficient privileges to add the associated phone record...

I guess the issue is that they are appending a phone activity to a records in another business unit but how come they can edit the leads but be unable to add the phone record.

Any pointers would be gratefully received!!

We're running CRM 2011 on premise with UR14.

The phone record is different entity.

You should check the security privileges on the phone entity.

You should also check the security privilege called Append to.  This allows/stops user appending (in this case phone records) to the lead entity.

So you need to look at Phone entity append

    and Lead entity append to.

I may have got the append and append to the wrong way round but it's definitely these privileges

Thanks Ben, this helps but...  Which entity do I need to set the "append" privilege on?  There is no entry for the Phone Call entity in the security role assignment grid.

I had believed that I needed to set Append on the Activity entity, but tried that without success.  So I'm thinking that Phone Calls must come under another heading but I can't figure out which!

PS.  This article helped me with Append and Append To: blogs.msdn.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-crm-append-vs-append-to-what-s-the-difference.aspx

    To add to this issue...

Phone call records come under the Activity entity as I first thought.

I have now run a test where I have given full organisation level rights for every action to the Lead and Activity entity to these users and they are still unable to save a Phone Call record against the other Business Unit leads to which they have been shared.

I'm guessing there is something else wrong here...

Here is a blog post which explains the Append and Append To

    blogs.msdn.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-crm-append-vs-append-to-what-s-the-difference.aspx

Let’s take the example of Accounts and Opportunities.  In this relationship, “Accounts” is the parent and “Opportunities” is the child.  There are multiple Opportunities per Account.  Say a user needs to be able to relate Opportunities to Accounts, either through the Potential Customer lookup field on the Opportunity, or through the “Opportunities” navigation bar area on an account.

In this example, a user must have “Append” permissions on Opportunities (child) and “Append To” permissions on Accounts (parent).  I think of it this way—I’m APPENDING the opportunity, and I’m APPENDING it TO the account.

Thanks Ben this helped.  It also helped when I found out that I needed to add the security privilege to the default team in the BU as well as to the user.  No idea why this made a difference but it did!
